About Simrik Atelier

Simrik Atelier: Where Tradition Meets Mastery

At Simrik Atelier, we are dedicated to preserving the rich traditions of Newari Paubha art. Established by Lok Chitrakar, our atelier serves as a school, art studio, and gallery, emphasizing iconography, iconometry, and religious philosophy. We create intricate Paubha paintings of Hindu and Buddhist deities on cloth, keeping this ancient art form alive.

A Space for Traditional Art of Nepal!

Lok Chitrakar founded Simrik Atelier in 1998 to address the decline of traditional art and to mentor new artists. Our practical and theoretical training programs ensure a comprehensive understanding of Paubha art, with quotas for underprivileged students.

Paubha, a nepali heritage jewel over 1,000 years old, unifies spirituality and art. We ensure that our students appreciate this tradition as both a practice and a fine art. Students from around the world, including those from Kathmandu University, come to learn at Simrik Atelier. Notable students like Ryuzo Chijiki from Japan and Chelsea Wiebers from the USA reflect the global interest in our work.

Simrik Atelier is committed to providing artists with the skills to sustain themselves through Paubha art, ensuring its continuity as a vital part of Nepalese culture. Our aim is for viewers to see each Paubha painting as a text that narrates profound spiritual stories. Join us at Simrik Atelier to preserve, learn, and master the art of Paubha. Embrace our core values of tradition, education, and cultural preservation, ensuring this vital part of Nepalese heritage thrives for generations to come.
